SONG OF THE WEEK - RIO MANZANARES, RAY PEREZ

This week's song is a Salsa interpretation of a beautiful song about the Manzanares River in Cumana, Venezuela. This song has been very popular since the mid  20th century and aside from Salsa the most popular style of interpretation is the style of "Parang", which is a popular folk style originating from Trinidad and Tobago, brought to Trinidad by Venezuelan migrants.

The version of the song we have selected is by Ray Perez, one of the true legends of Salsa and Latin piano maestros. It is a song that has been chosen by world renowned performers to choreograph showcases.

There is a rare and great opportunity to see this artist live in 20-22 February 2015, at the Zurich Salsa Festival. I urge you to join myself and many other Salsa lovers to see this great man and his band! What more, you can get a discount on the congress pass if you use promo code caramelozurich.

I give you... el maestro RAY PEREZ with "RIO MANZANARES"! :)

Song of The Week - Celeste, Johnny "El Bravo" Lopez

This week our song of the week is a tribute to another great Puerto Rican artist – Johnny “El Bravo” Lopez.

Born in San Juan , Puerto Rico, he began his career in 1962 and in 1967 Johnny “El Bravo” made his first appearance in The Bronx Casino Club New York. “El Bravo” and his Super Combo could bring the atmosphere on the dance floor to a boil at will with their fiery guarachas.

“Celeste” is an amazing piece that is not often played at the socials, but when it does happen it can inspire such a surge of raw energy on the dance floor that you might get your soles burning!

In his own words, Johnny ‘s all-time goal was to make music for the people to make people dance, which is what you are sure to want to do when you hear this gem!

SONG OF THE WEEK - EL REY DE LA PUNTUALIDAD, HECTOR LAVOE

"Salsa with Humour"!! And for that matter, with heart. Given it's a little late this week, this week's choice is by The King Of 'Punctuality' himself, Hector Lavoe, who is still loved by all salerseros around the world. Even more so he was loved by his bandmates from the legendary Fania All Stars.

This global hit was a humourous takeoff on Lavoe's constant lateness and for when he went missing from shows. This still did not stop his contemporaries from loving him and his amazing and unique voice, and they combined together beautifully to highlight their fondness and relationship with Lavoe.

I give you... the 'Elvis Of Salsa', the 'Singer Of Singers' HECTOR LAVOE with "EL REY DE LA PUNTUALIDAD"! :D

SONG OF THE WEEK - TAKE FIVE, TITO PUENTE

"Re-workings work"!! And it's about time I featured the most famous and arguably greatest Latin musician of all time, the undeniable legend that was Tito Puente!

My selection this week is an amazing re-working, and arguable a more danceable version, of the original Brubeck-Desmond song by the Mambo King himself.

With a recalling of the beautiful sax solo by the great Mario Rivera and containing probably the most powerful and trance inducing timbales section I've ever heard (just watch Tito Puente's face in this video clip!!), it makes this Latin jazz Mambo one of the great masterpieces of Latin music.

I give you... the Mambo King TITO PUENTE with "TAKE FIVE"! :D
