SONG OF THE WEEK - ÁMAME, EL GRAN COMBO

I get asked a lot by students and other instructors about good songs to use for practicing with, for teaching classes with and so on. Invariably, songs for classes come about from popular good songs, but alas they get used so much in classes that certain DJ's are reluctant to play them as they become over-played, for example, Chin Chon Chow, HK Mambo, La Llave. This is a shame, speaking as both a teacher and a DJ, I love these songs.

This week's selection is a great song to teach in classes with and a great song to DJ at parties, congresses and festivals. Penned by Palmer Hernandez and released by El Gran Combo in 1989, in the album by the same name which topped the US Billboard Tropical Albums Chart, it went on to become one of most cherished salsa romantica songs.

I give you... the mighty & legendary El Gran Combo with "ÁMAME"! :D

SONG OF THE WEEK - LA TOALLA, TITO RODRIGUEZ

This week's selection is one of my personal favourites, so much so I choreographed one of my student performance teams to this wonderful song, with the man responsible being one of all-time great soneros of Latin music.

One of a glittering array of Puerto Rican musical legends, Tito Rodriguez, born Pablo Rodriguez Lozada, was known by many also as the "El Inolvidable" (The Unforgettable One) and you see why by amount of classic albums and songs that he released. He was a sonero, percussionist, composer, record producer and band-leader. His talent and versatility was equalled by very few.

I give you, with much fondness... TITO RODRIGUEZ with "LA TOALLA"! :D

Song of the Week - Diferente, Fuego 77

This week we give you the hot hot hot Fuego 77 with their song "Diferente"! This band was formed in NY by Puerto Rican musicians right about 1977, they lasted about 3 years. Despite this being their only album, this was one of the best Salsa albums of the 70's. The band was led by Noey Matos, a conga player and pianist. Arranger and composer Marcos Hernandez wrote 8 of the 10 tracks of the Fuego 77 album.

This track is a really popular one with the dancers, firing up the floor every time! Check out this video from the Amsterdam International Salsa Congress 2011, I played "Diferente" as the last song and it was a blast!

Below is also the full track for your listenning pleasure ;-)

SONG OF THE WEEK - EL REY DE LA PUNTUALIDAD, HECTOR LAVOE

"Salsa with Humour"!! And for that matter, with heart. Given it's a little late this week, this week's choice is by The King Of 'Punctuality' himself, Hector Lavoe, who is still loved by all salerseros around the world. Even more so he was loved by his bandmates from the legendary Fania All Stars.

This global hit was a humourous takeoff on Lavoe's constant lateness and for when he went missing from shows. This still did not stop his contemporaries from loving him and his amazing and unique voice, and they combined together beautifully to highlight their fondness and relationship with Lavoe.

I give you... the 'Elvis Of Salsa', the 'Singer Of Singers' HECTOR LAVOE with "EL REY DE LA PUNTUALIDAD"! :D
