SONG OF THE WEEK - ÁMAME, EL GRAN COMBO

I get asked a lot by students and other instructors about good songs to use for practicing with, for teaching classes with and so on. Invariably, songs for classes come about from popular good songs, but alas they get used so much in classes that certain DJ's are reluctant to play them as they become over-played, for example, Chin Chon Chow, HK Mambo, La Llave. This is a shame, speaking as both a teacher and a DJ, I love these songs.

This week's selection is a great song to teach in classes with and a great song to DJ at parties, congresses and festivals. Penned by Palmer Hernandez and released by El Gran Combo in 1989, in the album by the same name which topped the US Billboard Tropical Albums Chart, it went on to become one of most cherished salsa romantica songs.

I give you... the mighty & legendary El Gran Combo with "ÁMAME"! :D

SONG OF THE WEEK - BANG BANG, JOE CUBA SEXTET

This week, it's all about the Boogaloo! ;)

I've chosen one of the most famous, and most covered, of the Boogaloo genre. In 1967, the great Jimmy Sabater wrote what would become the biggest hit for the Joe Cuba Sextet, "Bang Bang"! A joyful and exuberant mix of funk, R&B and afro-cuban rhythms that helped launch the Latin Boogaloo craze from the mid 1960's.

It has been performed to by some of the greatest Latin dancers in the world and played in clubs, parties and festivals all around the world since its release.

I give you... the Joe Cuba Sextet with "BANG BANG"! :D

Brought to you by one of the top composers and pianists alongside his troupe, the Joe Loco Quintet! From being the pianist for the legendary Machito, to working alongside top band leaders such as Pupi, Joe Loco's melodic pinao play saw his music cross many genres from Latin to Jazz to American Classic Pop.

SONG OF THE WEEK - LA TOALLA, TITO RODRIGUEZ

This week's selection is one of my personal favourites, so much so I choreographed one of my student performance teams to this wonderful song, with the man responsible being one of all-time great soneros of Latin music.

One of a glittering array of Puerto Rican musical legends, Tito Rodriguez, born Pablo Rodriguez Lozada, was known by many also as the "El Inolvidable" (The Unforgettable One) and you see why by amount of classic albums and songs that he released. He was a sonero, percussionist, composer, record producer and band-leader. His talent and versatility was equalled by very few.

I give you, with much fondness... TITO RODRIGUEZ with "LA TOALLA"! :D

SONG OF THE WEEK - TENGO UN TUMBAO, FUEGO 77

A fiery song for this week's song selection to get your week started on the right foot and it's one of my personal favourites! ;)

Fuego 77 is the only and self-titled album of this NYC/Puerto Rican orchestra from 1978 on the Alegre record label. Even though it is their only album to date, it is one of the best albums of the 70's. Excellent guaguanco's like this song make this a high-calibre album.

The orchestra was lead by conga player Noey Mats and the pianist, arranger and composer Marcos Hernandez, who wrote 8 out of the 10 songs on the album.

I give you, with much pleasure... FUEGO 77 with "TENGO UN TUMBAO"! :D
